Sunday, October 21st, 2018

Sonoma, California

The 55th running of the SCCA Championship Runoffs took place this past week in Sonoma, California at Sonoma Raceway. This 2.52 mile circuit challenges drivers with its intense elevation and high speed, high risk corners. This event also brought the best Formula Mazda drivers from North America to compete against one another.

Bryce entered his first ever SCCA National Championship Runoffs weekend leading the SCCA Super Tour points Championship with six wins and three track records. Entering the weekend Bryce new he would be challenged by Jarrett Voorhies, as well as previous SCCA Runoffs Champions, Mike Anderson, Melvin David Kemper Jr., and Bill Weaver.

Jumping into qualifying on Thursday, Cornet secured pole position and the Tire Rack Pole Award. Starting Pole, Bryce jumped out to an early lead, but a first corner incident brought out a full course caution bunching the pack back up for a restart. Cornet would be challenged by Mike Anderson into turn one and two on the restart, but Bryce would hold firm and begin going to work gapping the field.

Bryce in the Texas Autosports Formula Mazda took the checkered flag on lap 20 by a margin of 18.8 seconds to second place to be named the 2018 Formula Mazda SCCA National Champion.

“Thank you to all who have supported me and my racing this year; my Mom, Dad, and Aunt, friends, Texas Autosports, Formula Mazda, Wild Range Media, 405 Brewing, SPJ Electric, Verra Industrial Automation, Mazda, and Goodyear Tires. The list is so big. At the start of the year, I was unsure I would even be able to make the first race at COTA in March. Through massive amounts of support and hard work, we made to each event and took the biggest win of the year. This is what we have worked towards all year. To win is something special.” – Bryce Cornet

Cornet has his eyes set on the 2019 season.
